The history of the old school building is fascinating as its modern day usage. Part of the charm of Stone School Inn
is the local history surrounding the school. Opening in 1834, it was built of limestone hauled from bluffs along the
Mississippi River. For over 150 years , the address was simply :Oldest School”, Hannibal, Missouri.
There’s a trap-door hidden in the floor, where the ground was hollowed out so probably connect to
the underground railroad – given its proximity to the river.
